What is a
probiotic?
Probiotics or ‘good’ bacteria are live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host (WHO 2002).
They can be consumed as live cultures in some types of yogurt such as Activia or drinking yogurts, such as Actimel.
The body has different ways of defending itself; the most obvious way being through your skin which acts as a primary boundary between germs and your body. Other less visible defence mechanisms include your gut.
The gut acts like a filter that absorbs nutrients your body needs to survive and plays an essential role in defending your body against germs that enter with food or the air as you breathe.
The gut is home to around 70% of your immune system – a vital human defence against germs and bad bacteria. Topping up your good bacteria regularly can be important.
