Importance of water

Water is the key to life and health. It is essential for almost all body functions… breathing, transporting nutrients and oxygen to cells, maintaining normal temperature and much more.

Our bodies are 60% water, an essential component of all human tissue. We can only survive days without water but we can survive weeks without food. It is important to drink regularly to maintain your body's vital water balance.

Good hydration helps the cardiovascular system and circulation to deliver nutrients and oxygen to our cells and muscles, and regulates our temperature through sweating. It also functions to carry natural waste away from our cells, dilutes them and takes them to the kidneys to be eliminated.

Scientific studies link adequate water intake to survival, health promotion, sustained physical and mental performance and safety and productivity in the workplace.

You lose up to 2.6 litres of water per day through normal functioning, urine, skin, breathing etc. When thirst happens, your body has already begun to lack water, but this does not tell us how much water our bodies need.

Even mild dehydration can be associated with reduced cognitive and physical performance, fatigue and tiredness, constipation or worse. When urine is concentrated, it becomes more prone to crystallising which is the first step in kidney stone formation. Kidney stones are crystals formed from a build-up of salt and minerals and can be very painful.

Your inner water is renewed around every six weeks. The amount of water we need to drink everyday to replenish this, is determined by our physiology, our lifestyle and the climate we live in.

An average diet supplies 20-40% of a person’s daily fluid intake, so the remaining 60-80% needs to be achieved through beverage consumption. On average drinking 1.5 - 2 litres of water per day is a good hydration habit to protect your body from dehydration and its consequences.

Water is the healthiest beverage

Water is the only liquid we need to hydrate. Other drinks hydrate but they may also contain added elements that your body has to process, eliminate or store. These elements such as sodium and artificial colourings burden your body while sugar, increases your daily calorie intake which can lead to increased weight.

Drinking water is a key foundation of a healthy lifestyle: it is the healthiest way to hydrate - no calories, no sugar and no acid content.
